Mobile World Congress America 2018, which is participated by over 1,000 companies from 100 countries in the world, opened in Los Angeles, the second largest city of the U.S. on September 12, 2018 for a 3-day event. The MWCA (formerly CTIA) used to be held in San Francisco but switched to LA this year. There are a few reasons that the Mobile World Congress America, the mobile communication technology fair, relocated to LA from San Francisco. Since the most important aspects to be presented by MWCA are in the intersection of media and mobile, LA was the best city for GSMA as the leader of global media & entertainment industry.

GSMA Marketing Director Michael O’Hara said “LA plays a tremendous role as a perfect platform to discuss the core convergence of mobile, digital, entertainment and contents industries. The exhibition participants would see and listen to the core topics related to mobile communication through MWCA as usual, but in fact they will vividly experience its huge effects on the media and entertainment industry in the exhibition,” explaining about the background of having MWCA in LA.

GSMA confidently says so because 5G, a telecommunication technology of dream, has started to be commercialized. 5G can stream and service high-quality entertainment contents to mobile consumers much more quickly in a wider space and can realize AR technology, enabling consumers to experience sports games or entertainment performances in magnificence, splendor, and 3D.
In the end, MWCA seems to have more flexible and interesting image to a ‘media & entertainment contents focus’ from ‘technology-centered’ hard mobile communication fair, by relocating itself from San Francisco to LA.
Of course, MWCA is still centered on mobile and communication technology, and IoT, AI, and blockchain that are recently leading the overall mobile industry ecology are important topics. Companies participating in the exhibition present latest products and services based on mobile and communication technology, and there is an intense innovation competition among world-class companies to dominate the market.
Meanwhile, many medium-sized venture companies and startups with solid technologies have participated in MWCA this year. Organized by the Korea Association for ICT Promotion (KAIT), the Korea exhibition booth was setup which includes ADMI, Air Sound, INFOSE, IWAZ, Next Innovation, THE-S (Daejeon Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency), GLS, H&Beat, Salt & Light (Daejeon Business Support Agency), Blue Wavetel, SPS, Minds Lab, MtoV, Noseun, PaintPam (KITA Daejeon/Sejong/Chungnam Headquarters) and Blue Communication, Science Technology Korea.
Head Manager Chang-joon Yang of KAIT who setup the Korea exhibition booth said “Since MWC is an ICT exhibition focusing on mobile communication technology and the competition hall of next generation technology, we strived to make promising companies with excellent IoT, AI, and Smart City technologies participate. We look forward to having some good performances. We hope our companies take this fair as an opportunity to compete with leading technology companies in the world and seek possibilities to expand into the global market.”.
